Inconel 718 is an age-hardenable nickel alloy that retains very high strength at elevated temperature, widely used in turbine and downhole components.

Machinability is approximate and rated against free-machining 1212 steel at 100%. Higher is easier to cut.

What it is

Unlike 625, 718 is strengthened by precipitation hardening, so it can be machined in the softer solution-treated condition and then aged to full strength. It is a mainstay of aerospace hot sections and high-pressure downhole tools.

How it cuts

Difficult in the same ways as 625, and harder still once aged. Most machining is done before ageing wherever tolerances allow.

What catches people out

The ageing cycle is long and the part moves during it. On close-tolerance work, the sequence of rough, age, finish has to be planned into both the process and the price from the start.

What is the difference between Inconel 625 and 718?

625 gets its strength from solid-solution alloying and is used mainly for corrosion resistance; 718 is age-hardenable and reaches much higher strength, which is why it dominates turbine and high-pressure downhole applications.
