A clearance fit is one where the hole is larger than the shaft, leaving a deliberate gap so the parts can slide or rotate relative to each other.
Also called: slip fit · running fit
In practice
The size of the gap defines the fit class, from a close sliding fit that barely moves to a loose running fit that allows for lubrication, thermal growth and misalignment.
Why it matters
Too little clearance in a rotating fit and the assembly seizes as it heats up in service. Too much and it knocks. The gap is engineered, not left over.
