A fixture is a purpose-built device that holds a workpiece in a known, repeatable position for machining or inspection.
Also called: jig · tooling
In practice
Fixtures locate the part the same way every time so an operator does not have to indicate each one in. A jig does the same and additionally guides the cutting tool.
Why it matters
Fixturing is what turns a slow one-off into an economical production run. It is also the first thing worth designing when a part comes back for the second or third time.
