Tramming is the process of aligning a milling machine head so its spindle is exactly perpendicular to the table.
In practice
An indicator is swept in a circle across the table and the head is adjusted until the reading is the same all the way round.
Why it matters
A head that is out of tram produces surfaces that are not flat and holes that are not square to the face, and no amount of careful programming corrects it. It is checked before accurate work, not after a part has failed inspection.
