When an original manufacturer quotes a long lead time on a mechanical component, having it machined locally is frequently faster, because the delay is usually a production scheduling queue rather than anything about the part itself.
The part is available — in four months. Meanwhile the equipment sits, or runs on borrowed time. This is now routine across a lot of industrial supply, and it is worth knowing which parts are sensible to have made and which are not.
What to do

Check whether it is genuinely a machined part
Machined metal components are strong candidates. Castings, forgings, electronics, seals, bearings and anything requiring specialised production tooling generally are not.

Find out why the lead time is long
If it is a production queue, a local shop can beat it comfortably. If it is because the material itself is on allocation, nobody can — including the shop.

Get a sample or a drawing to the shop
An existing part, even a worn one, or a drawing if you have it. Either is enough to quote against properly.

Compare total cost, not unit price
A machined part may cost more per piece than the OEM component. Set that against what four months of downtime or degraded operation actually costs, and the comparison usually looks different.

Order a spare while the setup exists
The setup is already paid for. A second piece is dramatically cheaper than the first and removes this problem permanently.

Is it legal to have a replacement part machined instead of buying it from the OEM?
- For ordinary mechanical components, generally yes. Where a design is covered by an active patent, or where the part forms part of a certified assembly, there are real constraints — those are worth checking before ordering rather than after.
Will a machined replacement be as good as the original?
- It can be better. The shop is not bound by the original production method, so material, hardness and stress-raising features can be improved — which matters most when the original failed earlier than it should have.
