A worn bearing or pivot bore is normally repaired by boring it oversize and fitting a sleeve, restoring the original dimension without replacing the housing it sits in.
The bearing keeps spinning in its housing, the pivot has gone oval, or the bore has picked up and no longer holds a press fit. The housing itself is sound — often it is a large casting or weldment that would be enormously expensive to replace.
What to do
- 01
Establish what the bore has to be true to
A bore rarely matters on its own; it matters relative to another bore or a face. That relationship determines whether this is a simple boring job or a line-boring setup.
- 02
Measure the wear pattern, not just the size
How it wore says why. An oval bore points to a load direction; a tapered one points to misalignment. Restoring the size without addressing the cause guarantees a repeat.
- 03
Bore oversize and sleeve
The worn bore is machined true and oversize, and a sleeve is fitted — pressed, or fitted and secured — then finish bored to the original dimension. The assembly goes back to standard parts.
- 04
Line bore where several bores share an axis
If two or more bores have to align, they are cut in one pass by a bar passing through all of them, so the alignment is inherent rather than something measured back into.
Questions People Ask
Can a worn bore be repaired instead of replacing the housing?
- Usually. The standard repair is to bore it true and oversize, fit a sleeve, and finish bore back to the original size — which restores the assembly to standard bearings and fasteners without replacing a large and expensive housing.
What is line boring?
- Line boring machines two or more bores in one pass along a single supported bar, so they share one true axis by construction. It is the standard repair where alignment between bores matters more than the individual sizes.
