The verdict
Volume decides it. Under a few hundred pieces, machining from solid is almost always the cheaper and faster route and gives better material integrity. Above that, the casting tooling starts to pay for itself — and most cast parts still need machining afterwards on their critical features.

Are machined parts stronger than cast parts?
- Generally yes, because they are cut from wrought material that has been rolled or forged, giving consistent grain structure and no porosity. Castings can carry internal voids and inclusions that are invisible from outside and only found when the part fails or is machined into.
Can a cast part be replaced with a machined one?
- Usually. It is a common solution when a casting is obsolete or the pattern no longer exists. The machined replacement is typically stronger, though it may be heavier if the original design relied on shapes only casting can produce.
