Short answer
A weldment is usually cheaper and faster for large, mostly open structures, while machining from solid gives a stronger, dimensionally more stable part with no heat-affected zones or welding distortion.

Choose Weldment when

The verdict
Size and loading decide it. If the part is big and mostly air, weld it. If it is highly stressed or has to hold tight tolerances, cut it from solid. And if it is welded and then machined, the sequence matters — weld, stress relieve, then machine, or it will not stay where it was cut.

Is a weldment weaker than a machined part?
- At the joints, generally yes. The weld and the heat-affected zone beside it have different properties from the parent material and are common failure locations under fatigue or shock loading. Away from the joints the material is unchanged.
Why does a weldment need stress relief before machining?
- Welding puts heat and locked-in stress into the part. If it is machined before that stress is relieved, removing material lets the stress redistribute and the part moves — sometimes days later. Weld, stress relieve, then machine is the sequence that prevents it.
