316 is an austenitic stainless steel containing molybdenum, which gives it markedly better resistance to chlorides and salt water than 304.
Machinability is approximate and rated against free-machining 1212 steel at 100%. Higher is easier to cut.
What it is
The molybdenum addition is specifically what resists pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments — which is why it is the default choice for marine, coastal and chemical service. 316L is the low-carbon version, preferred where the part will be welded.
How it cuts
Behaves like 304 but slightly tougher and slightly more prone to work hardening. Same requirements: sharp tools, rigid setup, real depth of cut, generous coolant.
What catches people out
Standard 316 can sensitise during welding — chromium carbides form at the grain boundaries in the heat-affected zone and locally destroy the corrosion resistance. If the part is to be welded and then live in salt water, specify 316L.

What is the difference between 304 and 316 stainless?
- 316 contains molybdenum, which gives significantly better resistance to chlorides and salt water. For coastal, marine or chemical service that difference matters; for general indoor use 304 is usually sufficient and cheaper.
Should I use 316 or 316L?
- Use 316L if the part will be welded. The lower carbon content prevents chromium carbide forming at grain boundaries in the heat-affected zone, which would otherwise destroy corrosion resistance exactly where the weld is.
