12L14 is a leaded, free-machining carbon steel that cuts faster and finishes better than any other common steel, at the cost of strength and weldability.
Machinability is approximate and rated against free-machining 1212 steel at 100%. Higher is easier to cut.
What it is
Lead and sulphur additions break the chip and lubricate the cut. It is the reference point for easy machining and is used where large quantities of small turned parts are needed quickly.
How it cuts
Exceptional. It produces short broken chips, tolerates high speeds, and leaves an excellent finish straight off the tool. Where a part allows it, 12L14 can substantially reduce cycle time.
What catches people out
It should not be welded — the lead content produces poor, contaminated welds and hazardous fume. It is also low strength and not suitable for heat treatment to high hardness.

Can 12L14 be welded?
- It should not be. The lead that makes it machine so well contaminates the weld and produces hazardous fume. If a part needs welding, 1018 is the usual substitute.
