Facing is cutting across the end of a part to produce a flat surface perpendicular to its axis.
In practice
On a lathe the tool travels from the outside diameter toward the centre, or the reverse, taking material off the end. It establishes a clean, square reference face and sets overall length.
Why it matters
The faced end is usually the surface everything else is measured from, so a face that is not square to the axis puts an error into every subsequent dimension.
