Reaming finishes a previously drilled hole to a precise diameter and a smooth surface using a multi-fluted tool that removes only a small amount of material.
In practice
A reamer follows the existing hole rather than correcting its position, taking off a few thou to bring it to size with a good finish. It is faster than boring but cannot fix a hole that is in the wrong place.
Why it matters
Reaming is the right choice for an accurately sized hole in an already-correct location; boring is the right choice when position or straightness also needs fixing. Choosing wrong wastes either money or accuracy.
