Threading is cutting a helical groove on a part so it can screw into or accept another threaded component.
In practice
Threads are single-pointed on a lathe, cut with a tap or die, or milled with a thread mill. Large, high-strength and unusual pitches are usually single-pointed because the shop can control the exact form and fit.
Why it matters
A thread that gauges correctly but was cut with a worn tool can still gall or seize under load. On pressure-containing and oilfield connections, thread form and finish are as important as the diameter.
