Reverse engineering in machining is producing a manufacturable drawing and a replacement part from an existing component when no original documentation is available.
In practice
The existing part — often worn, broken or obsolete — is measured, its material identified, and its critical features determined by inspection and by how it failed. From that a drawing is produced and the replacement is made.
Why it matters
The hard part is not measuring; it is judging which dimensions were design intent and which are wear. Copying a worn part faithfully reproduces the wear, so the replacement fails the same way.
