A weldment is an assembly built by welding several pieces of material together, often machined after welding to bring critical features to size.
In practice
Weldments replace large solid billets or castings when the shape is mostly open structure. They are cheaper in material and lead time, and they move as they are welded.
Why it matters
Welding puts heat and stress into a part, so a weldment machined before it is stress relieved will not stay where it was cut. The sequence — weld, stress relieve, then machine — exists for that reason.
