Deburring removes the sharp raised edge of displaced metal left behind wherever a cutting tool exits the workpiece.

In practice
Every machined edge carries a burr. It is taken off with a file, a scraper, an abrasive, a tumbling process, or by machining a small chamfer along the edge.
Why it matters
A burr will cut a hand, damage a seal on assembly, hold a part off its locating face so it measures wrong, and break loose in service to become debris in a hydraulic system. It is the least glamorous operation on the traveller and one of the most consequential.
