A shaft is one of the most common parts a machine shop makes and one of the least forgiving. Concentricity, straightness, journal finish and keyway position all matter, because the shaft is usually carrying load and rotating inside something expensive.
We turn shafts on CNC and manual lathes, cut keyways and splines, and hold the diameters and surface finishes your bearings and seals require. Long or slender work is supported so it does not deflect and chatter.
If the original shaft failed or is obsolete, bring us the broken one — we can measure it, model it and remanufacture it even without a drawing.

Can you machine a replacement shaft without a drawing?
- Yes. Bring us the old shaft — even if it is broken — and we will measure it, model it and machine a replacement. This is one of the most common jobs we do, especially for obsolete equipment where drawings no longer exist.
What size shafts can Machine Tech Services machine?
- We machine shafts across a wide range of diameters and lengths, up to approximately 40 inches in diameter for larger turned work. Send your dimensions and we will confirm what we can hold before you commit.
